OJSC TransContainer and Silmar SPb LLC sent the 100th container train St. Petersburg-Moscow

On September 8, 2011, a solemn event took place in St. Petersburg dedicated to the dispatch of the 100th container train St. Petersburg-Moscow, a joint innovative project of JSC TransContainer and Silmar SPb LLC.

This transport project is one of the most effective ways to solve the problem of access to container terminals in the port of St. Petersburg. Regular container train runs reduce transport load on the St. Petersburg-Moscow motorway.

The first joint container train, formed at the First Container Terminal of the Sea Port of St. Petersburg, was sent to Moscow from the Avtovo port station of the Oktyabrskaya Railway in May 2010. In total, from May 2010 to September 2011, 7107 TEUs were transported under this project.

Since the launch of the train, there has been a positive development dynamics of the project. In 2010, the train ran once every five days, currently the train runs every three days. The main transported goods: construction materials and consumer goods.

Today, the train is dispatched from such large container terminal of the port as First Container Terminal CJSC, Petrolesport OJSC, Fourth Stevedoring Company CJSC. One of the main advantages of sending container trains is a fixed schedule and following the “main route”, which significantly reduces travel time. For example, cargo delivery from Avtovo and Novy Port stations to consignees’ warehouses in Moscow takes only three days. Moreover, the delivery time by rail is 19 hours.

The advantages of transporting goods by rail compared to road transport in this area are the possibility of one-time dispatch of a large batch of containers, more competitive freight rates, and ensuring cargo safety.

JSC TransContainer together with Silmar SPb LLC also plan to send trains from the terminals of the port of Ust-Luga and the ports of the Baltic states, the train from St. Petersburg to Moscow may become daily.

The comprehensive service for the delivery of goods from St. Petersburg to Moscow also includes the delivery of goods to the consignees’ warehouses in Moscow, the return of empty containers, cargo insurance, temporary storage of containers at the Moscow-Tovarnaya terminal.
