TransContainer Completes Lagernaya Terminal Renovation in Kazan with a 60% Capacity Increase

PJSC TransContainer (part of Delo Group) has completed the renovation of its terminal at Lagernaya station in Kazan by 60% raising its handling capacity – to 31K TEUs per year.

The renovation continued from 2020 to 2022, and the terminal did not suspend its operations throughout that period. This resulted in expanded loading area with its capacity increased from 11 to 52 conventional wagons, a new container storage site built with an area of 10K sq. m, the crane runway revamped, the crane site made 75 m longer, a new cold water supply system constructed for firefighting use, and an up-to-date lighting system installed at the terminal.

The CAPEX for the terminal's infrastructure amounted to some 150M rubles over the three years. At the next renovation step, which will be carried out based on the findings of the study of container cargo handling dynamics, it is planned to enlarge the reach-stacker operating area by moving the access tracks aside. This step will help increase the handling capacity by another 16K TEUs – up to 47K TEUs per year.

"The renovation of Lagernaya station terminal has considerably boosted the handling rate and the holding capacity of the loading areas, which is especially relevant considering our customers’ high interest in setting up regular block trains between different regions of Russia as well as in the export and import traffic. We are planning to go on developing the terminal to expand its capacities and satisfy the growing demands of the region for containerized transportation in future," said Victor Markov, First Vice-President of TransContainer.

“Tatarstan’s businesses have come forward with a request to reduce logistics costs and goods delivery times. This demonstrates a considerable potential of the entire region from the standpoint of seaport-bound container logistics arrangements. Tatarstan’s President Rustam Minnikhanov in his address to the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan emphasized the importance of container transportation development, calling it a reserve for businesses in their target market expansion. The renovation of Lagernaya terminal will enable much more convenient and faster cargo deliveries for not only Kazan manufacturing plants, but also companies from other districts of the republic,” noted Farid Abdulganiyev, Entrepreneurs’ Rights Commissioner for the President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Assistant to President of the Republic.

Last September, Sergey Shishkarev, Chairman of the Boards of Directors of Delo Group, and Rustam Minnikhanov, President of the Republic of Tatarstan, discussed the key areas of cooperation in the transportation and logistics. Special attention was paid to the container traffic arrangement, cargo base containerization, and investment activities in the largest economic clusters of the Republic of Tatarstan, one of the country’s most industrialized regions.

Lagernaya terminal is located in Kazan. It specializes in arrangement of train services in traffic with Russian regions (Ural, Siberia, Far East) and China. The key merchandise handled at the terminal includes synthetic detergents, polyethylene, polycarbonate, food products, equipment, and machinery, as well as machine oil and products for the petrochemical sector. The terminal accounts for some 65% of all container cargo traffic of the region.
